Field Service Technician

The Field Service Technician is responsible for installing, calibrating, configuring, testing, maintaining, evaluating and troubleshooting, pre-commissioning, commissioning and repairing on-site chlorine generation, water tank mixers, and related equipment. Additional responsibilities include operator training and providing technical support to maintenance technicians and/or treatment plant operators. The Field Service Technician will primarily service PSI products and systems at locations throughout the southwestern United States. The ideal candidate for this position will be based out of PSI’s Milpitas, CA facility.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provide technical consultation and installation assistance to on-site personnel and contractors;
  • Properly document, label, and return all defective parts resulting from repair;
  • Provide customer pre-consultation, site readiness preparation, and startup monitoring;
  • Provide on-site training of customer personnel on proper operation of equipment;
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment;
  • Repair machines and systems, including rebuilds;
  • Compliance with PSI’s safety and personal protective equipment policies since customer sites may allow exposure to dangerous or hazardous conditions;
  • Determine the correct tools and equipment required to perform day-to-day duties;
  • Complete service reports, recording repairs and warranty and maintenance performed;
  • Work with Engineering, Project Management, and Sales teams to resolve escalated problems;
  • Ensure that all materials, tools and equipment provided to you are kept safe, secure, and in good working order;
  • Make technical recommendations to maintenance technicians and treatment plant operators;
  • Ensure site work is carried out in the required order, for completion by the required timeline;
  • Assist with unit refurbishments and replacements at customer sites; and
  • Program equipment based on project-specific requirements and specifications as provided by the Project Management team.

Required Qualifications

  • Three to five years’ experience installing/repairing/maintaining water treatment equipment or in a related field;
  • Experience with electro-mechanical pneumatics hydraulics, AC/DC motor controls, PLC's, VFD's, and pump systems;
  • Strong mechanical, technical, and troubleshooting skills;
  • Basic computer skills and ability to use basic functions of Microsoft Office for reports and time and record keeping;
  • Good written and oral communication skills;
  • Travel up to 50-75% of the time to locations within the U.S and internationally, primarily within the southwestern U.S.;
  • Have and maintain a valid driver's license with a clean driving record (MVR will be run);
  • Self-motivated and ability to work and think independently;
  • Maintain a valid passport with ability to travel internationally;
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime as workload dictates, including weekends; and
  • Project a professional image in his or her role of providing service and support to customers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the water treatment field;
  • Associates degree or higher in technical field or equivalent;
  • PLC and OIT programing and diagnostics; C++ and Java preferred;
  • Machinery demonstration/pilot testing or controls knowledge; and
  • Fluency in Spanish.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop or kneel, talk and hear, and use fingers and hands to feel objects, tools or controls;
  • Must have manual dexterity to operate the equipment and tools required for this position;
  • Must be able to quickly respond (with the hand, finger or foot) to a signal (sound, light, picture) when it appears;
  • Must wear furnished uniform and maintain clean and professional appearance while working with customers, vendors and colleagues;
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 lbs.;
  • Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus;
  • Ability to perform work under a variety of weather conditions;
  • Ability to climb and work at heights on towers, roofs, water towers and other elevated structures; and
  • Working on construction sites with exposures to dangerous conditions.

Work Environment

  • Approximately 25% to 50% Light Industrial - May be exposed to areas of high noise levels, hazardous propellants, chemicals and industrial facilities. Appropriate PPE and training will be provided for all conditions; and
  • Approximately 50% to 75% Customer Jobsites - May be exposed to a variety of weather elements as well as areas of high noise levels, hazardous propellants, chemicals and industrial facilities. Appropriate PPE and training will be provided for all conditions.
  • Exposure to liquid and dry chemicals and substances associated with water and wastewater treatment, including permanganate, polymers, sodium hypochlorite, and liquid ammonium sulfate, among others.
