The Position:

The Materials Research Assistant will assist the development and delivery of new fuel cell materials into Loop’s current and future fuel cell designs including, requirements definition, component selection, component validation, and technology transfer to product development and manufacturing.

Each day will be different, yet key responsibilities and expectations include:

  • Characterize materials with a wide range of equipment and chemical analytical techniques, including Universal Testing machines, DMA, DSC, FT-IR, TGA, XRF, SEM-EDS

  • Assist with developing and the implementation of advanced diagnostic techniques for evaluation of material performance and durability

  • Characterize materials, organize results and assist in data analysis

  • Document and communicate experimental methods, results and uncertainties; generate and maintain engineering documentation including standard operating procedures and test reports

  • Comprehend and follow standard test procedures in accordance with applicable standards (e.g. ASTM, ISO and/or DIN)

  • Assist in material characterization assessments in support of root cause analysis

  • Communicate with a highly driven team of engineers, scientists, and technicians to achieve team deliverables safely, effectively, and with a high level of quality

  • Contribute creative and innovative ideas to improve efficiency in laboratory operations

  • General laboratory inventory, cleaning and maintenance duties as required

What we are looking for:

  • Hands-on experience with wet chemistry and sample preparation

  • Experience on mechanical testing and analysis with universal testing machine

  • Experience in thermal and mechanical testing equipment (e.g. DMA,TGA, DSC, rheometer) and interpretation of test data

  • Experience with analytical equipment (e.g. GC, FT-IR, XRF, EDS.), including data analysis

  • Knowledge of thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers, composites, materials science, and materials processing would be an asset

  • Working knowledge of fuel cells stacks or systems is desirable

  • Hands-on experience on development of new testing methods/tools would be an asset

  • Strong oral and written communications skills

  • Be self-motivated, thrive in an environment with multiple assignments, and be willing to learn and adapt in a fast-paced product engineering organization

  • Demonstrate flexibility and creativity to meet requirements while keeping to tight schedules

  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
