The Position:
We are seeking a skilled and high performing Junior Materials Scientist for an important role within our growing team.
The ideal candidate enjoys being hands-on, is very detail oriented and has a knack for presenting data in a way that is clear and meaningful.
The Junior Materials Scientist will assist the development and delivery of new fuel cell materials into Loop’s current and future fuel cell designs including, requirements definition, component selection, component validation, and technology transfer to product development and manufacturing.
Each day will be different, yet key responsibilities and expectations include:
Characterize materials with a wide range of equipment, including Universal Testing machines, DMA, DSC, FTIR, TGA, XRF, SEM-EDS
Complete testing using various chemical analytical techniques
Assist in developing test plans and new test methods and collecting, reviewing, analyzing test data for the following efforts
Fundamentally understand and characterize new materials
Assess compliance of new materials against functional requirements and operational profiles
Work with stack component designers (plate, MEA, HW) to ensure smooth and proper integration of new materials into processes, designs and products in cooperation with product development, quality, manufacturing, supply chain, and external suppliers
Comprehend and follow internationally accepted ASTM, ISO and/or DIN test standards to perform certain material characterizations
Complete material characterization assessments in support of degradation mechanism investigations and failure analysis
Communicate with a small team of engineers, scientists, and technicians to achieve team deliverables safely, effectively, and with a high level of quality
Come up with creative and innovative ideas to develop and deliver new structures and/or new materials for improved cost, performance and/or lifetime
What we are looking for:
Relevant degree in science or engineering (e.g. Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Engineering)
Working knowledge of thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers, composites, materials science, and materials processing
Hands-on experience with wet chemistry and sample preparation
Practical experience in mechanical testing using a Universal Testing Machine and interpretation of test data
Practical experience with analytical equipment (e.g. DMA, DSC, etc.), including data analysis
Strong oral and written communications skills required
Working knowledge of fuel cells stacks or systems is desirable
Hands-on experience on development of new testing methods/tools would be an asset
Be self-motivated, thrive in an environment with multiple assignments, and be willing to learn and adapt in a fast-paced product engineering organization
Demonstrate flexibility and creativity to meet requirements while keeping to tight schedules
Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
