Loop Energy is helping build a zero-emissions world – and we need your help!
We are a Canadian based industry-leading developer, manufacturer and supplier of hydrogen fuel cell systems - our products are reshaping the industry with an unmatched combination of fuel efficiency and power density.
We have recently raised 100 million dollars, are now publicly traded, and we are excited about our future.
The Position:
We are seeking a skilled and high performing Fuel Cell Materials Characterization Specialist for an important role within our growing team.
The ideal candidate enjoys being hands-on, is very detail oriented and has a knack for presenting data in a way that is clear and meaningful.
The Fuel Cell Materials Characterization Specialist will investigate failure mechanisms during development, production and in field with the goal of improving durability and reliability of the product. The focus of expertise shall be on characterization of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) with techniques that are applicable to broader fuel cell stack and balance of plant components.
The successful candidate will be expected to select and execute diverse materials and electrochemical characterization tests of fuel cell MEAs and other stack components to quantify structure or property parameters that link to performance and lifetime.
Each day will be different, yet key responsibilities and expectations include:
Identify methods, organize, and carry out structural and compositional fuel cell characterization work to support engineering, quality, and production departments
Investigate failure mechanisms with the goal of improving durability and reliability of the product.
Determine best techniques and most effective paths to attain the desired information to uncover failure modes for MEA and other fuel cell components
Perform disassembly of fuel cell stacks and prepare specimens
Correlate data from analytical techniques and electrochemical tests (or field data) to drive toward conclusions
Establish, maintain, and continuously improve characterization protocols and capabilities including analysis and archival of data; validate methods and equipment
Write analysis reports and communicate findings with project teams, management, external customers and/or suppliers
Support root cause analysis efforts using structured problem solving (8Ds) to tackle challenging technical issues with components, stack, and modules
What we are looking for:
Solid experience in fuel cell, battery, or other electrochemical device characterization or failure/ root cause analysis
Hands-on experience in fuel cell, battery, or other electrochemical device characterization using diverse compositional and structural characterization
techniques (e.g., SEM/EDS, XRD, FIB, IR, NMR, GC-MS, XPS, XRF etc.) including sample preparation methods
BS or MS in analytical chemistry, materials science, physics or related field
Proven ability to independently write programs and routines to collect and analyze data efficiently and accurately
Comprehensive understanding of structure and properties of electrodes/electrolytes in fuel cells, battery, or related applications and their common functions and failure modes
Understanding of key electrochemical techniques (CV, EIS, LSV, etc.) for characterization of fuel cell electrodes.
Proficient in statistical analysis of data and familiar with root cause and 8D methodologies
Proven ability to summarize and display complex data in a comprehensible form
Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
