The moment you stop seeing it as a script and start treating it as a conversation, that&#8217;s when you truly succeed.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Grace Clancy, Recruitment Consultant<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In the fifth episode of <strong><em>Humans of Recruiterflow<\/em><\/strong><em>, <\/em>meet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/grace-clancy-aa3295254\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grace Clancy<\/a>, Recruitment Consultant &#8211; Procurement U.S at Cogs!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally from County Clare, Ireland, Grace grew up in a small village where she hungered to explore \u201cbigger things in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-grace-s-journey-into-recruitment\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Graces_Journey_Into_Recruitment\"><\/span><strong>Grace\u2019s Journey Into Recruitment<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>From childhood, like when I was seven years old, I wanted to be a flower, but it wasn\u2019t practical. I had to go into something I thought would make me money<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grace began working at The Nineteenth Bar because, in Ireland, \u201cthere weren\u2019t many jobs except in bars or restaurants.\u201d She learned interpersonal and management skills here, ensuring customer satisfaction and smooth team operations. It helped her understand how to communicate, manage different personalities, and handle high-pressure situations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After earning her business degree in Galway, Grace realized she not only enjoyed but thrived in sales and marketing. During this degree, she was nominated for and received an award for a sales pitch she created, which further solidified her urge \u201cto move out and do something big.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She landed her first recruitment job at Cogs Global only through a chance recommendation from another recruiter.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within her first three months at Cogs, she set the company record for the fastest deal closed, which still makes her proud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_does_Success_mean_to_Grace\"><\/span><strong>What does Success mean to Grace?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For Grace, success isn\u2019t just about the paycheck\u2014although she admits she\u2019s very money-motivated. It\u2019s about recognition, independence, and accountability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf people can recommend me, that\u2019ll be a dream come true,\u201d she says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than anything, she measures success by her ability to connect, adapt, and keep moving forward, whether it&#8217;s within her current company or in new ventures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lessons_Learned_and_Challenges_Overcome\"><\/span><strong>Lessons Learned and Challenges Overcome<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Recruitment, for Grace, wasn\u2019t a smooth ride from the start. She admits that it took nearly nine months to find her footing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most significant challenges was the<strong> unpredictability of human behavior<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clients who don\u2019t respond, candidates who change their minds, and competition from other recruiters\u2014all add complexity to the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>You see, 100% of our work is 2% of the client\u2019s<\/em>. <em>When you follow up and get no answer, that brings frustration<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Graces_Approach_to_Differentiating_Herself\"><\/span><strong>Grace\u2019s Approach to Differentiating Herself<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many recruiters find it challenging to stand out in a crowded market, and Grace was no different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Trying to differentiate yourself from other recruiters in your niche is tough.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What helped? <strong>Authenticity<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t really go by the book, script for the script. I try to make it conversational and crack some jokes. I talk to people as if I genuinely want to fix their problems. Helping them comes first rather than looking for the deal.\u201d<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grace\u2019s candid outlook on the nature of recruitment sets her apart.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you&#8217;re doing recruitment only because you love the people, you\u2019re going to hate it here because people don\u2019t love you back,\u201d she says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Success_Mantra_3_Core_Qualities_Every_Recruiter_Must_Have\"><\/span><strong>The Success Mantra: 3 Core Qualities Every Recruiter Must Have<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Grace believes that some traits are non-negotiable for success in recruitment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-open-mindedness-and-adaptability\">1. <strong>Open-Mindedness and Adaptability<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the first lessons Grace learned in recruitment was to remain open-minded. \u201cYou need to be very open to taking on opinions. If you think, \u2018I am going to do it my way anyway,\u2019 you are basically shooting yourself in the foot.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adaptability is the key to success in literally any professional field!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-emotional-endurance\">2. <strong>Emotional Endurance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Recruitment is challenging, and setbacks are inevitable. Grace\u2019s advice? \u201cGo cry for 10 minutes, let it all out, and then bounce back.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She says that there are both nice and not-nice people out there, and recruiters shouldn\u2019t let them get into their heads. It is crucial to be able to embrace both the good and bad aspects of the job and run with it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-active-listening\">3. <strong>Active Listening<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Listening isn\u2019t passive; it\u2019s a skill. \u201cWrite down everything they are saying, and then try to understand where they are coming from. Grace advises that it will help you speak confidently and seize better opportunities,\u201d Grace advises.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_AI_Debate_Friend_or_Foe\"><\/span><strong>The AI Debate: Friend or Foe?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the \u201cfear pandemic in the market\u201d of whether AI will replace recruiters [and other roles], Grace views it as an ally, not an adversary.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She acknowledges the value of ChatGPT and <a href=\"https:\/\/recruiterflow.com\/blog\/ai-recruiting-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI recruiting tools<\/a> like Recruiterflow, particularly in speeding up tasks like drafting job descriptions, recommending perfect matches, and suggesting interview questions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cAI isn\u2019t here to replace recruiters\u2014it\u2019s here to help us do what we do best, faster and smarter,\u201d <\/em>Grace says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She believes that no matter how much intelligence it is fed on, AI can\u2019t replicate the empathy and trust that recruiters bring to the table.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Advice_for_Rookies_Dial_It_Up\"><\/span><strong>Advice for Rookies: Dial It Up!<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Grace\u2019s advice for newcomers is simple but profound:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cDon\u2019t be scared to get on the phone. At the end of the day, they\u2019re either going to hang up on you or they\u2019ll be interested. They are just people, after all.
