It is also the reason a lot of good candidates never surface, because a string can only ever return what somebody happened to type.

Most Boolean guides stop at the operators. This guide on boolean search in recruitment covers the operators, the strings worth keeping, and the point at which no amount of bracket discipline will find the person you are describing.

Which is the more interesting half, because that is where most searches actually fail.

What Boolean search actually is

The operators that do the work

Five of them carry almost everything.

AND
narrows.
OR
widens.
NOT
excludes. Quotation marks hold a phrase together so
"head of talent"
is one idea rather than three words. Brackets control the order, so the engine reads your string the way you meant it rather than left to right.

Everything else is a variation. If you can nest a bracket and group synonyms with
OR
, you can write any string you will ever need.

Why recruiters still use it

Because it is exact, it is fast, and it is free. When you know the precise words that will appear on the right person’s profile, Boolean is the shortest distance to them.

That condition is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

Boolean search strings that work

The shape of a good string

A good string is a stack of
OR
groups joined by
AND
. One group per idea: the title, the skill, the sector, the location. Never more than four or five groups, or you have written a string that returns nothing and taught yourself nothing.

("head of talent" OR "talent director" OR "head of people") AND ("series b" OR "series c" OR "scale-up") AND (london OR remote)

The discipline is in the synonyms. Most failed searches are not badly built, they are under-populated. Write down every title the same job carries at five different companies before you search.

LinkedIn boolean search, specifically

LinkedIn supports
AND
,
OR
,
NOT
, quotes and brackets in the main search bar, and ignores wildcards entirely. It also silently caps how deep you can go without a paid seat, which is the real constraint most of the time rather than the syntax.

Two habits help. Search job titles in the title filter rather than the keyword box, because the keyword box matches anywhere on the profile and floods you with people who merely mention the title. And exclude aggressively:
NOT recruiter NOT "talent acquisition"
removes most of the noise from a senior search in one stroke. There is more on working the platform itself in our guide to recruiting on LinkedIn.

Strings for the searches you run most

For a first-time manager rather than a career one:

("engineering manager" OR "head of engineering") AND ("first management" OR "stepped up" OR "promoted to")

For someone who has done it at your client’s stage, not just your client’s size:

("vp sales" OR "sales director") AND ("series a" OR "series b") NOT enterprise

For a market map rather than a shortlist:

("chief financial officer" OR cfo) AND (fintech OR payments) AND ("london" OR "manchester")

Keep the ones that work. A string you rewrite from scratch every time is a string you will write badly under pressure.

Where Boolean stops

It searches words, not meaning

Boolean matches characters. It has no idea that a growth lead and a demand generation manager may be the same person, or that “scaled the team from 4 to 40” and “built the function” describe the same achievement.

So the string returns people who used your vocabulary. The ones who described the same work differently are sitting in your own database, unreturned, which is the quiet cost nobody counts.

It cannot search what was said

The most useful thing you know about a candidate is rarely on their profile. It is in a call note from March, a transcript where they mentioned they would relocate for the right role, an email where they named the number they would move for.

No Boolean string reaches any of that. It was never built to.

It cannot weigh

A string is a gate: in or out. It cannot tell you that of the 140 people who passed, these 9 are worth calling first and here is why. Ranking is a judgment, and Boolean does not make judgments.

Around 71% of placements come from candidates already in the database before the search opened (Source: The Economics of Recruiting). If the only way to reach those people is to guess the words they used about themselves, most of them stay unreachable.

What to do about it

Keep Boolean for what it is good at

Exact, known, narrow. A named company list. A specific certification. A title you are certain of. Boolean is still the fastest tool for all of it, and abandoning it because something better exists for other jobs is a mistake.

Make the rest searchable by meaning

The searches Boolean cannot do are the ones where you can describe the person but not predict their words. That is a different retrieval problem, and it needs an index built on what the work was rather than what it was called.

This is what AIRA Search does inside Recruiterflow. It reads the brief the way you wrote it, reasons across everything the firm knows about a candidate including notes and call transcripts, and returns a ranked list where each result cites the roles, companies and dates behind it. Boolean finds rows. Natural language search finds people, and tells you why it picked them.

The honest framing is that it does not replace Boolean. It covers the searches Boolean was never able to run.

Record the market while you are in it

Either way, the search is only as good as what you have recorded. Every mandate teaches you something about a market, and most of it is thrown away when the search closes. Keeping it is the whole argument behind talent mapping, and it starts with knowing what state your records are in, which is a database audit.

Seven checks on your Boolean this week

Take your last string and count the synonyms per title. Under three is usually too few.

Run it again with the title filter instead of the keyword box and compare the counts.

Add one exclusion group and see how much noise disappears.

Search your own database with the same string before you search anywhere external.

Pick a placement you made last year and check whether your current string would have found them.

Write down one brief you could describe out loud but could not turn into a string.

Save the three strings you rebuild most often somewhere the whole desk can reach.

Number five settles most arguments about whether a string is working.

FAQs

What is Boolean search in recruitment?

A way of combining keywords with the operators AND, OR and NOT, plus quotes and brackets, so a search engine or database returns only records matching a precise pattern of words.

What are the main Boolean operators?

AND narrows a search, OR widens it, NOT excludes. Quotation marks keep a phrase together and brackets control the order the operators are applied in.

How do you write a Boolean search string for recruiters?

Group synonyms for each idea with OR, join the groups with AND, and keep it to four or five groups. Most weak strings fail because the synonym lists are too short, not because the logic is wrong.

Does LinkedIn support Boolean search?

Yes, for AND, OR, NOT, quotes and brackets. Wildcards are not supported, and how many results you can actually work through depends on your seat rather than your syntax.

Is Boolean search still relevant?

For exact, known criteria it is still the fastest option. It stops being useful when you can describe the person but cannot predict the words on their profile.

What is the difference between Boolean and natural language search?

Boolean matches the words you typed. Natural language search interprets what you meant and ranks results by evidence, including material like notes and transcripts that a keyword string cannot reach.

The string is not the skill

Recruiters who are good at Boolean are not really good at Boolean. They are good at knowing how a market describes itself, and the string is only where that knowledge gets written down.

Which is why the limit matters. Once you can describe a person better than you can predict their vocabulary, the string stops being the bottleneck and the index does.

Bring a brief you have never been able to turn into a string, and we will run it against your own database on a demo.

Boolean is the oldest tool on a recruiter’s desk and still one of the most useful.
