This is not an unprecedented step. Even with their ATS partners like <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/recruiterflow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/recruiterflow.com\">Recruiterflow<\/a>, Indeed had made their plans clear that they will be restricting access to recruiting and staffing agencies.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"d2e8\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_made_Indeed_make_this_move\"><\/span><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">What made Indeed make this move?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"bf69\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">There are several reasons that are behind Indeed making such a move. They already talked about one of the reasons and that is improving the quality of search and experience of candidates.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"86be\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Battling Google for jobs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"4683\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">The second reason is competitive pressure from the likes of Google. Google search still remains the biggest way Indeed attracts candidates looking for a job. A simple search on Similarweb will tell you that 42% of Indeed\u2019s traffic comes from searches.<br \/>\nIndeed\u2019s model is that of an aggregator where it aggregated jobs in an area and gave users a better way to look for the jobs they want. So the value chain was pretty simple \u2014 Search engines -&gt; Indeed ?Companies\/agencies posing on Indeed. As Indeed was able to get a lion\u2019s share of search traffic that was generated on google for people trying to find jobs, the business thrived.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"3b6b\" class=\"graf graf--figure graf-after--p\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder is-locked\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder-fill\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"progressiveMedia js-progressiveMedia graf-image is-imageLoaded is-canvasLoaded\" data-image-id=\"1*eNZOeWh2lxUrOliqr7B9sw.png\" data-width=\"1156\" data-height=\"475\" data-is-featured=\"true\" data-action=\"zoom\" data-action-value=\"1*eNZOeWh2lxUrOliqr7B9sw.png\" data-scroll=\"native\"><canvas class=\"progressiveMedia-canvas js-progressiveMedia-canvas\" width=\"75\" height=\"30\"><\/canvas><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"progressiveMedia-image js-progressiveMedia-image alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/800\/1*eNZOeWh2lxUrOliqr7B9sw.png\" alt=\"acquisition process steps\" width=\"800\" height=\"328\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/800\/1*eNZOeWh2lxUrOliqr7B9sw.png\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"256d\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">The business model of Indeed is predicated on playing arbitrage with Google search and taking a chunk of this pie. This fact is the core business model of almost every content aggregator on the web(think yelp!). What helps them differentiate is that they can optimize their experience for just one thing, unlike google. Google has to optimize its user experience for a multitude of use cases.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ed83\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">With Google entering the market with Google for jobs, it is going to have an impact on Indeed and maybe Indeed is already feeling the pinch. Despite google\u2019s chops for making it easier for people to search for Jobs, Indeed still retains the top spot. However, the castle now seems to be built on shaky ground.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a254\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Although there is no public data, there is a great chance that Indeed saw its top of the intent traffic(active job seekers) being lost to Google. This means a change in the way they position themselves with job seekers. One of the ways to do this would be to establish themselves as a place where candidates come directly without google. This means removing the middleman and getting candidates straight to organizations recruiting. Posting jobs on Indeed is completely free. A lot of recruiting agencies work on a contingency recruiting business model. This means that they get paid only if the candidate they introduced gets hired. This creates a race against time to get the HR time stamp. Recruiting agencies are often competing against a myriad of other agencies to submit the same candidate. This leads to behavior where agencies keep jobs open even if they are not hiring for it but to build their database. I would venture a guess that a host of other free job boards might make the same move.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"f2b6\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"So_the_question_is_whats_next_for_recruiting_and_staffing_agencies\"><\/span><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">So the question is what\u2019s next for recruiting and staffing agencies?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"224d\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">The fundamental expectation from a recruiting and staffing business is rapidly evolving. The candidate pool that is active is easily available to businesses themselves. What they need is a helping hand to access the pool that is passive. Well, in the age of information, a business model predicated on information asymmetry just doesn\u2019t make a lot of sense! I know that a lot of Recruiters still make 5\u20136 figure income just doing this but I wouldn\u2019t expect that business to grow quickly.<\/p>\n<p id=\"fd90\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">What can you do to stay a step ahead of the future?<br \/>\nIf as a recruiter, your only value add is that you collect candidates, screen them, and submit them, it\u2019s not going to help you in the new way of doing things. To become a successful recruiter, you need to have a deep understanding of people, the niche of your recruiting, and the ability to source great candidates.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7770\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Modern clients expect you will bring something to the table that they can\u2019t themselves.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"ba29\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\">Recruiting expertise in your niche<\/li>\n<li id=\"aac4\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Clients may not always be best placed to identify great sources to source candidates.<\/li>\n<li id=\"e2a1\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Becoming a true value partner for your clients<\/li>\n<li id=\"f705\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Embrace proactive sourcing<\/li>\n<li id=\"d1e4\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Find the candidates that they can\u2019t find anywhere else<\/li>\n<li id=\"94e1\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Deliver true value by helping them go through the recruiting process and avoid mistakes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"6ff7\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li\">As a recruiter, you solve one or both of these problems for your clients.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"000d\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">You save them time<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p id=\"9ce0\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">I don\u2019t have time to screen candidates. So I am going to pay someone to source candidates. Here, you are competing against someone who can offer their time at a lesser price.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"a548\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">You\u2019re an enabler<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p id=\"2d6c\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">You help them achieve something they couldn\u2019t have themselves. The client just doesn\u2019t know how to fill their positions. Here, you are not selling your time but your expertise. You are competing with a very small number of people who can deliver the same to your clients.<\/p>\n<p id=\"410b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">It is important that you realize that selling time doesn\u2019t scale well. Time is a commodity but expertise isn\u2019t and that\u2019s what you want to be selling. You are selling expertise, you are selling your ability to forge and nurture relationships.
