Surgery Counselor

Job Summary:

  1. Educates patients regarding eye surgery procedures.
  2. Acts as an office contact for pre-op patients or patients who are considering surgery to answer their questions, hear their concerns and allay their fears regarding their eye surgery.


  1. Educate patients who are Premium IOL candidates about Premium Lens Implant Options using visual aids (i.e., eye model).
  2. Explain surgery procedures to patients in office and on the phone.
  3. Communicate with patients’ families regarding patient’s status during peri-operative and post-operative period.
  4. Provide pre-operative and post-operative instructions to patients.
  5. Provide any support necessary to alleviate patient anxiety including offering for the patient to talk with a VIP.
  6. Ensure informed consents and surgery orders are documented in charts before surgery, including risks and benefits of each procedure.
  7. Learn IOL Master A Scans and keratometry.
  8. Act as a liaison between the physician and patients.
  9. Monitor inventory of educational materials and paperwork necessary to complete
  10. Assist physicians and teammates as needed.
  11. Promote positive relationships with fellow employees, doctors, patients and staff at the surgery center.
  12. Perform other duties as directed by management.

  9. Knowledge of ophthalmic terminology, basic ophthalmic surgical procedures, refractive errors and Premium IOL Options.
  10. The ability to communicate high level concepts (i.e., target refraction) in an easy to understand manner.
  11. Strong communication skills.
  12. Ability to take direction and accept constructive criticism.

Work Qualities:

This position requires:

  1. Knowledge of lens implants, refractive errors, ocular anatomy, terminology and surgical
  2. Thoroughness, attention to detail and a high regard for accuracy.
  3. The ability to verify ones’ and others’ work and a keen eye to check for errors.
  4. A willingness to assist coworkers, doctors, patients.
  5. A caring disposition and ability to empathize with the patient who is contemplating undergoing ocular surgery so that the patient perceives a supportive and sympathetic attitude.
  6. Professionalism and courtesy with patients, other staff members and physicians.
  7. The ability to learn new tasks and to take on additional responsibilities as knowledge and experience increases.
